How pico toning works, why it's so popular, and realistic expectations.
Pico toning uses picosecond-pulse laser energy — pulses delivered in trillionths of a second — to break down pigment granules at multiple skin depths. The ultra-short pulse creates a photoacoustic effect (sound-wave-like fragmentation) rather than a purely thermal effect, reducing heat damage to surrounding tissue.
Traditional laser toning uses nanosecond pulses. Pico pulses are 1,000 times shorter — shattering pigment into smaller fragments that the immune system clears more efficiently. The result is faster brightening with less risk of post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation — particularly relevant for Asian skin.
Pico toning produces progressive brightening, reduced dark spots, improved skin tone evenness, and reduced pore appearance. Results are cumulative — each session builds on the previous. Most patients see meaningful improvement after 3–5 sessions.
Avoid sun exposure for 2 weeks before treatment. Arrive without makeup. Sessions take 15–30 minutes. Zero downtime — mild redness for a few hours is typical. SPF50+ daily following treatment is essential.
4–10 sessions for significant improvement depending on skin concern. Monthly sessions are common for ongoing maintenance.
Pico toning's anti-inflammatory effect can reduce active acne inflammation alongside pigmentation. For significant active acne, a dedicated acne treatment programme may be recommended alongside toning.
